The Way We Stay story 4 The Milk on the Table

The cup tipped over.

It happened fast.
One small elbow.
One quiet knock.

Milk spread across the table.
Then onto the floor.

Ishan froze.

His eyes went wide.
He did not move.
He waited for the sound.

Mama looked up from the sink.

She saw the milk.
She saw Ishan’s face.

She did not shout.
She did not sigh.

She walked over.

“It spilled,” Ishan said quickly.
His voice was thin.

Mama nodded.
“Yes,” she said.
“It did.”

She reached for a cloth.
Not in a hurry.

Ishan watched her hands.
They were calm.

“It was an accident,” Mama said.
“Accidents happen.”

Ishan let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding.

Mama handed him the cloth.
“Want to help me?”

He nodded.

They wiped together.
Slow strokes.
White milk disappearing.

The floor was cleaned.
The table dried.

Mama poured more milk.
She placed the cup a little farther away this time.

Ishan wrapped both hands around it.

Nothing spilled.

Mama smiled.
Not because it was clean.
But because he had stayed.

And so had she.
