Pip, Pebble, and the Blanket That Wouldn’t Choose

The evening breeze in Willow Patch felt just right—not too warm, not too cool.
That was good.
Because it was blanket time.
Pip dragged the big blue blanket across the floor. “Mine,” he declared, spreading it out proudly.
Pebble followed behind him, holding the corner. “Ours,” she corrected.
Pip blinked. “I got it first.”
Pebble smiled sweetly. “I’m using it first.”
They both pulled.
The blanket stayed exactly where it was.
Ollie, sitting nearby with a cup of warm leaf-tea, watched quietly.
Mama Mouse peeked in from the kitchen. “Blanket time already?”
“Yes,” said Pip.
“Yes,” said Pebble.
“And you’re sharing?” Mama Mouse asked.
“Yes,” Pip said quickly.
“Yes,” Pebble said even quicker.
Mama Mouse smiled and stepped away.
The pulling began again.
Not hard.
Just… determined.
The blanket slowly slid to the left.
Then the right.
Then bunched up in the middle like a confused cloud.
Pip huffed. “It’s choosing me.”
Pebble shook her head. “No. It’s choosing me.”
Ollie cleared his throat gently. “Blankets don’t usually choose.”
Pip looked at him. “This one does.”
The blanket suddenly flipped.
Both siblings tumbled backward.
They stared at the ceiling.
Then at each other.
Then laughed.
The blanket lay in a heap between them.
Who do you think the blanket should go to?
(If you were there, what would you suggest?)
Pip sat up first. “Okay. New plan. We cut it in half.”
Pebble gasped. “No!”
Ollie smiled softly. “That would make two unhappy blankets.”
Pip frowned. “But it’s too small for both of us.”
Ollie looked again.
He didn’t look at the blanket.
He looked at the floor.
Then the pillows.
Then the couch.
Then he smiled.
“May I ask something?” he said.
Pip and Pebble nodded.
“Where were you planning to sit?”
Pip pointed to the rug.
Pebble pointed to the same rug.
Ollie nodded. “And where is the couch?”
They both turned.
Right behind them.
Quietly waiting.
Pip blinked. “The couch has… cushions.”
Pebble’s eyes widened. “And arm space.”
Pip dragged the blanket over.
Pebble climbed up beside him.
The blanket suddenly felt very big.
Mama Mouse returned with warm cocoa. “Oh, that looks cozy.”
Pip wrapped one side of the blanket around Pebble.
Pebble tucked the other side around Pip.
The blanket didn’t move.
It seemed… pleased.
Ollie sipped his tea. “Sometimes,” he said gently, “the problem isn’t the blanket.”
Pip nodded. “It was the sitting.”
Pebble yawned. “The couch always wins.”
They leaned back.
The blanket stayed right where it was.
And this time, it didn’t have to choose.
