Story 3: The Drum That Spoke Softly

This story comes from a sunlit village near the savanna in Kenya, where evenings gathered people together and stories traveled faster than the wind.

In that village lived a girl named Amani. She loved listening more than speaking. While other children raced and shouted, Amani noticed quiet things—the way goats returned home at dusk, the smell of warm earth after rain, the rhythm of feet on dry ground.

At the center of the village stood an old baobab tree. Beneath it rested a large drum used only during celebrations. It was said the drum carried the voice of the village.

One year, the harvest festival approached. The elders asked the children to choose someone to play the drum.

Everyone wanted Kito.
He was loud. He was confident. His hands struck fast and hard.

Amani did not raise her hand.
