Story 13: The Game That Broke
Country thread: Brazil
Child: Thiago
Parent: Mae (mother)

The ball rolled fast.
Too fast.
Thiago kicked it hard.
It flew past the goal.
Hit Marcos’s leg.
Marcos stopped playing.
“That wasn’t fair,” he said.
Thiago’s chest tightened.
“I was just playing,” he said.
But his voice sounded sharp.
Marcos turned away.
The game broke.
Not loudly.
Quietly.
Thiago sat on the grass.
The ball rested near his foot,
unused.
Mae sat beside him.
She didn’t ask who was right.
“What happened inside?” she asked.
Thiago stared at the ground.
“I wanted to win,” he said.
“I didn’t see him.”
Mae nodded.
“Sometimes we move faster than we notice people.”
They sat.
The sun warmed their backs.
After a while, Thiago stood.
He picked up the ball.
Walked to Marcos.
“I didn’t see you,” Thiago said.
“I’m sorry.”
Marcos looked at the ball.
Then at Thiago.
“It hurt,” he said.
Thiago held the ball out.
“You can start,” he said.
Marcos took it.
He kicked gently this time.
The game came back.
Slower.
Kinder.
Mae watched from the shade.
She didn’t clap.
She stayed.
