Story 14: The Bowl Between Them

The kitchen was quiet.
Not empty.
Just working.
A bowl sat on the table.
Vegetables inside.
Uncut.
Waiting.
Eli stood nearby, swinging one leg.
Mama washed her hands.
“Can I help?” Eli asked.
Mama looked at the bowl.
Then at Eli.
“Yes,” she said.
“You can sit with me.”
They sat together.
The bowl between them.
Mama showed him how to hold the vegetable.
Slow.
Careful.
Eli copied her hands.
Not perfectly.
But earnestly.
One piece slipped.
Rolled onto the floor.
Eli froze.
“I made a mess.”
Mama smiled.
“We’ll pick it up,” she said.
They did.
Together.
The work went slower than usual.
The bowl filled unevenly.
Mama didn’t rush.
Dinner could wait.
“Why do you always do this?” Eli asked.
“Every day.”
Mama thought for a moment.
“Because eating is easier,” she said,
“when we make it together.”
Eli nodded.
He didn’t fully understand.
But he felt it.
When the bowl was done,
they washed their hands side by side.
Eli looked proud.
Not because he helped.
But because he belonged there.
The bowl stayed on the table.
Between them.
Like it always had.
🌿 A Quiet Moment for Parents
Children don’t help to finish work.
