Story 15: The Apple on the Plate

The basket sat on the counter.
Three apples inside.

Noah reached for one.
Then stopped.

Outside, voices drifted in.
Mama was at the gate, talking with a man and a boy.

They were asking for directions.

Mama poured water into two glasses.
She handed them over.

The boy drank carefully.
Slowly.

“He looks thirsty,” Mama said quietly,
when she came back inside.

Noah peeked through the window.
The boy wiped his mouth with his sleeve.

Mama picked up an apple from the basket.
She washed it.
Dried it.

She placed it on a small plate.

“Would you like to take this?” she asked Noah.
“Only if you want to.”

Noah looked at the apple.
Then at Mama.

“Will we have one?” he asked.

Mama nodded.
“We’ll share.”

Noah picked up the plate.
He walked with Mama to the gate.

Mama spoke first.
“For your journey,” she said gently.

She nodded to Noah.

Noah held out the plate.
The boy’s eyes widened.

“Thank you,” he said.

Noah didn’t say anything.
But his shoulders relaxed.

Later, at the table,
Mama cut the last apple into pieces.

They ate together.

No one mentioned the plate.
No one praised.

The basket was empty.
But the house felt steady.
