The shoes were still by the door.

Lina sat on the floor, building a tower from books.
One more.
Then another.

Mama looked at the clock.

“It’s time to get ready,” she said.

Lina didn’t move.

The tower leaned.
Wobbled.
Stayed.

“I’m not going,” Lina said quietly.

Mama walked over.
She didn’t lift Lina.
She didn’t repeat herself.

She pulled a chair near the window and sat.

“I’ll wait,” she said.

Lina added another book.
The tower fell.

She stared at the mess.

Mama patted the chair beside her.
Lina climbed up.

“What’s happening inside?” Mama asked.

Lina’s voice came out small.
“I don’t like when they laugh.”

Mama nodded slowly.

“That sounds heavy,” she said.

They watched the street for a moment.
Cars passing.
Leaves moving.

“Do you want to tell me more,” Mama asked,
“or do you want to sit?”

“Sit,” Lina said.

So they sat.

After a while Lina slid off the chair.
She walked to the door.
Put on her shoes.

Mama didn’t hurry her.

They left together.

The tower stayed on the floor.
Waiting for later.
