Riddle Roads – Story 5 – The Desert of Shifting Truths

The tunnel after the river sloped upward for a long time.

Kayal expected another cave.

Another underground chamber.

But when she stepped out—

Heat hit her face.

Bright light.

Wind.

She squinted.

Sand.

Endless sand.

Golden dunes rolled in every direction like frozen waves.

The sky above was wide and pale, stretching farther than she could see.

She turned around.

The cave entrance was gone.

Behind her stood only more dunes.

No river.

No tunnel.

Just desert.

“Seriously?” she muttered. “You couldn’t at least give me shade?”

The notebook in her hand felt warm—not magical warm, but sun-warmed.

The wind whispered across the sand, reshaping it constantly.

No footprints lasted more than a few seconds.

The world erased itself here.

She took a step forward.

The sand shifted.

Another step.

The dune she had just climbed flattened behind her.

“This place doesn’t want to remember anything,” she murmured.

The notebook suddenly heated.

Ink flowed onto the page.

First riddle.

I appear when heat bends the air,
showing lakes that are not there.
Chase me close and I disappear,
follow me and lose your way here.
What am I?

Kayal smiled despite the heat.

She had seen this once on a highway far from her village.

Water on the road that vanished as you approached.

“A mirage,” she said confidently.

The page glowed.

At once, the shimmering lake in the distance flickered and vanished.

In its place, a faint golden trail appeared on the sand.

Only visible when she looked through the notebook’s glow.

“So you hide the real path behind lies,” she whispered.

She followed the faint golden shimmer carefully.

The sun moved slowly overhead.

Sweat gathered at her temples.

After what felt like hours, she saw something ahead.

A city.

Tall white towers.

Blue water fountains.

Green trees.

Shade.

Her heart leapt.

“No way…”

She ran toward it.

But the notebook burned sharply in her hand.

She stopped.

Looked again.

The golden path curved away from the city.

The city shimmered strangely.

The first riddle echoed in her mind.

Chase me close and I disappear…

She swallowed.

“That’s not real.”

She stepped back.

The city flickered.

Then dissolved completely into sand.

Her stomach dropped.

If she had kept running…

She might have wandered forever.

The wind grew stronger.

The dunes shifted faster.

Suddenly, the golden path vanished.

Buried.

“Hey!” she protested.

The notebook flared hot again.

Second riddle.

I weigh nothing but can crush a heart,
I have no shape but tear worlds apart.
I grow in silence, fed by doubt,
and vanish the moment truth is out.
What am I?

Kayal slowed her breathing.

Weigh nothing…

Crush a heart…

Grow in silence…

Disappear when truth appears…

She thought of arguments.

Of misunderstandings.

Of being afraid to ask questions.

Of imagining things that weren’t true.

Her eyes widened.

“A lie.”

The page flashed.

The wind calmed instantly.

The sand stopped shifting.

The buried golden trail reappeared clearly.

The desert seemed to sigh.

“Truth matters here,” she whispered.

She walked steadily now.

The heat didn’t feel as harsh.

The sky deepened into soft orange.

At the top of the next dune, she saw it.

An enormous stone archway.

Half buried in sand.

Carved with strange symbols.

The next gate.

As she stepped toward it, the ground trembled slightly.

The sand beneath her feet began sliding away.

A sinkhole forming.

She stumbled back just in time.

The notebook burned hotter than ever.

Final riddle.

I stand tall but cast no shade,
I have no roots yet never fade.
I guide the lost in darkest night,
but vanish in the morning light.
What am I?

Kayal blinked against the wind.

Stand tall…

Guide the lost…

Vanish in morning light…

She looked up.

The sky was slowly darkening.

The first star had appeared.

Bright.

Clear.

Alone.

She smiled.

“A star.”

The moment she said it—

The sky exploded into thousands of stars.

The sand hardened beneath her feet.

The sinkhole stopped growing.

A solid stone path rose from the dunes, leading straight to the archway.

She walked forward carefully.

The desert no longer shifted.

It had chosen its shape.

She stepped through the arch.

The sandstorm behind her rose high and then collapsed inward, sealing the desert gate.

The notebook glowed softly.

New words appeared.

Fourth Gate Crossed.
Three remain.

Three.

Her chest tightened.

The journey was getting harder.

More dangerous.

More clever.

As she walked into the next tunnel, she noticed something again.

Footprints.

Small.

Light.

The same ones.

Still ahead of her.

But this time—

They hesitated near the entrance.

As if whoever left them had been unsure.

Or afraid.

Kayal touched the page gently.

“Who are you?” she whispered.

No answer came.

But far ahead in the darkness—

The faint humming returned.

Closer than ever.
