Kind Paws & Clever Minds Story 8 – Ollie, Pip, and the Race That Wasn’t a Race

It began with a line.

A very serious line.

Drawn in chalk.

Across the garden path.

Pip stood at one end, stretching dramatically.

Pebble stood beside him, adjusting her tiny headband.

“What is this?” Mama Mouse asked.

Pip pointed proudly. “The starting line.”

“For what?” she asked.

“For the Very Important Garden Race,” Pip declared.

Ollie blinked from the fence post. “I was not informed.”

“You are the judge,” Pip said.

“I see,” Ollie replied calmly. “What are we racing toward?”

Pip turned around.

He hadn’t thought that far.

Pebble pointed toward the apple tree. “There.”

Pip nodded quickly. “Yes. There.”

Grandpa Hedgehog shuffled in. “Is this a running race?”

“Obviously,” Pip said.

Grandpa raised a brow. “Obviously.”

Pip crouched low. Pebble crouched lower.

Ollie lifted one wing.

“Before we begin,” he said gently, “may I ask—what does the winner receive?”

Pip froze.

Pebble blinked.

They looked at each other.

They had not discussed prizes.

Grandpa cleared his throat. “I have one shiny button.”

Pip gasped. “A shiny button?”

Pebble’s eyes sparkled.

The race was now extremely official.

Ollie raised his wing again.

“On your marks… pause your paws…”

They both froze.

Ollie smiled slightly.

“Get set…”

Pebble leaned forward.

“Go.”

They ran.

Pip ran fast.

Very fast.

Pebble ran steadily.

Very steadily.

Halfway down the path, Pip looked back.

Pebble was behind.

He grinned.

Then—

He tripped over absolutely nothing.

He rolled once.

Twice.

Three times.

He stopped in a patch of daisies.

Pebble ran past him.

Then stopped.

She looked at the apple tree.

Then at Pip.

Then back at the apple tree.

Then at Pip again.

If you were Pebble, what would you do?

Pip popped up.

“I meant to do that,” he said confidently.

Pebble tilted her head.

Pip brushed off a petal.

“I was testing the grass.”

Pebble walked back.

“You forgot something,” she said.

“What?” Pip asked.

“You forgot that races are more fun together.”

Pip blinked.

The apple tree suddenly looked less important.

Grandpa Hedgehog shuffled closer.

“The shiny button is still shiny,” he reminded them.

Ollie watched quietly.

Pip looked at Pebble.

Pebble looked at Pip.

Then Pip grinned.

“New rule,” he announced. “This is not a race.”

Pebble smiled.

“It’s a double-fast walk.”

They walked.

Quickly.

Side by side.

They reached the apple tree together.

Grandpa clapped slowly.

Ollie nodded.

“The winner,” Ollie said, “is teamwork.”

Grandpa handed them the shiny button.

They both held it.

It sparkled exactly the same for two paws as it did for one.

Later that afternoon, Pip drew another chalk line.

Pebble looked suspicious.

“Is it another race?”

“No,” Pip said wisely.

“It’s a Very Important Together Line.”

Ollie smiled.

Some races are worth winning.

And some are better when nobody runs alone.
