Story 6 – Pip, Ollie, and the Chair That Grew Taller

The living room in Willow Patch was unusually quiet.
That was because everyone was staring at the chair.
“It looks taller,” Pip said.
Ollie adjusted his glasses. “Chairs don’t usually grow.”
Mama Mouse crossed her arms. “I sit in that chair every morning. It was not this tall.”
Pebble stood on her toes. “It’s definitely taller.”
The chair stood proudly near the window, holding a small stack of books on its seat.
Pip climbed up and sat.
His feet dangled.
He gasped. “My feet don’t touch the floor!”
Grandma Mouse peeked in from the hallway. “Oh good, you found my chair.”
Pip blinked. “Your chair?”
“Yes,” Grandma said cheerfully. “I needed it higher.”
Ollie looked closer. He didn’t look at the chair first.
He looked under it.
A thick cushion was tucked neatly beneath the seat.
Mama Mouse laughed. “That’s my cushion!”
Grandma nodded. “I borrowed it.”
Pip slid off the chair. “Why does the chair need help being tall?”
Grandma Mouse smiled. “So I can reach the window plant when I water it.”
She demonstrated, standing on the chair very carefully.
The plant waved slightly.
Pip clapped. “The chair became a helper!”
The cushion shifted.
The chair wobbled.
Everyone froze.
What do you think should happen next?
(If you were there, what would you do?)
Ollie stepped forward calmly. “Perhaps the chair would like some balance.”
Mama Mouse fetched a small step stool.
Pebble brought another cushion.
Together, they rearranged things.
The chair sat lower.
The stool sat sturdier.
The plant was still reachable.
Grandma Mouse smiled. “That feels safer.”
Pip nodded. “The chair is still tall… just not surprised-tall.”
Everyone laughed.
Grandma watered the plant.
The chair rested quietly.
Later, Pip tried sitting again.
His feet touched the floor.
“Perfect height,” he declared.
Ollie smiled. “Things don’t have to be the biggest to be helpful.”
Grandma Mouse patted the chair. “You did well today.”
The chair didn’t grow again.
And the living room felt just right.
