Story 8: The Quiet That Found Something

The afternoon felt long.
Too long.
Nila lay on the floor, staring at the ceiling.
She rolled to one side.
Then the other.
“I’m bored,” she said.
The words landed flat.
Papa was nearby, folding clothes.
He didn’t say, Find something to do.
He sat down beside her.
“Bored can feel empty,” he said.
“Sometimes it’s just waiting.”
Nila sighed.
Waiting again.
The room was quiet.
Not sleepy.
Just still.
Nila’s eyes moved to the window.
A tiny line of light danced on the wall.
She sat up.
“Look,” she said.
Papa looked.
The light moved when a leaf outside moved.
Nila waved her hand.
The light waved back.
She laughed.
A small laugh.
Then another.
Papa watched.
He didn’t interrupt.
Nila followed the light across the wall.
Across the door.
Across her own hands.
The afternoon felt different now.
Not full.
But alive.
Papa smiled.
“Looks like boredom found something,” he said.
Nila nodded.
She stayed with the light.
And the quiet stayed kind.
