Story 9: The Last Glass of Water

The light was low.
The blanket was ready.
“Sleep time,” Amma said softly.
Kunal sat up.
“I need water.”
Amma nodded.
She brought a small glass.
Kunal drank.
Slowly.
When the glass was empty,
he looked up again.
“I need one more,” he said.
Amma sat on the edge of the bed.
She didn’t say no.
She didn’t sigh.
“Does your body need it,” she asked,
“or does your heart?”
Kunal thought.
The room was quiet enough to think in.
“My heart,” he said.
Amma smiled.
She put the glass down.
She lay beside him.
Just for a moment.
Her hand rested on his back.
Warm.
Still.
Kunal’s breathing changed.
The room listened.
“I can stay until your eyes feel heavy,” Amma said.
They stayed like that.
No water.
No words.
Soon, Kunal’s eyes closed.
The glass waited on the table.
Unused.
Amma stayed until sleep did not need her anymore.
