Banyan Tree Tales Story 8: The Drum That Sounded Loudest

In the village lived a young drummer who believed he was the best musician anyone had ever heard.

Whenever there was a wedding, he played.
Whenever there was a festival, he played louder.
Whenever someone else performed, he played even louder.

“If people cannot hear me,” he would say,
“they will forget me.”

One year, during the harvest festival, musicians from nearby villages came to perform.

There were flute players.
There were singers.
There were dancers with tiny bells tied to their ankles.

The young drummer stepped forward proudly.

“I will begin,” he said.

And he struck his drum with all his strength.

Boom. Boom. BOOM.

The ground seemed to shake.

But the flutes could not be heard.
The singers stopped singing.
The dancers lost their rhythm.

People covered their ears.

After a few minutes, the village elder gently raised his hand.

“That is enough,” he said.

The drummer looked confused.

“Was I not loud enough?” he asked.

The elder smiled kindly.

“You were loud,” he said.
“But music is not a battle.”

The next performer, a quiet flute player, stepped forward.

He played softly.

At first, people leaned closer to listen.

Then the dancers joined.
Then the singers followed.

The music blended like flowing water.

The young drummer watched.

For the first time, he did not play.

He listened.

Later, the elder handed him the drum again.

“Now,” he said, “play as part of the music.”

The drummer struck softly this time.

Not to be louder —
but to belong.

The festival that night was the most beautiful the village had ever heard.

From that day on, the young drummer still played.

But he learned something new:

Sometimes, the strongest sound is the one that supports others.

🌟 Moral

Being the loudest does not make you the best.
True greatness knows how to listen.
