Story 3 – Ollie, Pip, and the Light That Wouldn’t Sleep

The sky over Willow Patch had turned the color of warm milk.
That meant one thing.
“Bedtime,” Mama Mouse said gently.
Pip flopped onto the rug. “Already?”
“Yes,” she smiled. “The moon is up.”
Pip peeked out the window. The moon winked back. He sighed and shuffled toward his room.
Ollie was already there, sitting on the small shelf, carefully closing a book.
“Good evening,” Ollie said softly.
Pip climbed into bed and pulled the blanket up to his chin. Mama Mouse kissed his head and switched off the light.
The room went quiet.
Very quiet.
Too quiet.
Pip opened one eye.
The light clicked back on.
Pip blinked. “I didn’t do that.”
Ollie tilted his head.
Mama Mouse peeked in. “Did you turn it back on, Pip?”
“Nope.”
She smiled sleepily. “Alright then. Good night.”
She switched it off again.
The light stayed off.
For three whole seconds.
Click.
On again.
Pip sat up. “Okay… now it’s awake.”
Ollie hopped down from the shelf and watched the switch.
The light flickered once.
Then stayed bright.
What do you think is turning the light on?
(If you were Pip, what would you guess?)
Pip whispered, “Maybe it’s scared of the dark.”
Ollie smiled gently. “Lights don’t usually get scared.”
Pip pulled the blanket higher. “Maybe it doesn’t want me to sleep.”
The light hummed softly, as if listening.
Mama Mouse returned, rubbing her eyes. “This light has never acted like this.”
She turned it off again.
They waited.
Nothing happened.
Pip relaxed.
Just as his eyes began to close—
Click.
The light turned on.
Pip groaned. “It’s playing with us.”
Ollie crouched near the wall. He didn’t touch the switch. He watched the cord.
Then he watched the night breeze coming through the window.
The curtain moved.
The cord moved too.
Just a little.
Ollie pointed. “May I try something small?”
Pip nodded.
Ollie gently tied the curtain back with a ribbon from Pip’s drawer.
The room grew still.
Mama Mouse turned the light off one last time.
They waited.
The light stayed dark.
Pip smiled. “It went to sleep.”
Ollie nodded. “It just needed to stop being tickled by the wind.”
Pip snuggled into his pillow. “Good night, light.”
The moon shone quietly through the window.
Ollie returned to the shelf.
Mama Mouse whispered, “Thank you.”
Ollie smiled. “Good night.”
Pip yawned. “Tomorrow… can we read the cloud book again?”
“Of course,” Mama Mouse said.
The room stayed dark.
The light stayed quiet.
And bedtime finally felt like bedtime again.
