Wise Tales of Young Minds Story 4 — Why the Snow Stayed Quiet

The mountains were awake, but very quiet.

Snow covered the roofs, the paths, and the tall trees that stood like careful listeners. Even footsteps sounded different here. Softer. Slower.

Ina pulled her wool cap lower over her ears as she stepped outside with her father. Her breath turned into a small white cloud and drifted away.

“Why is it so quiet today?” she asked.

Her father smiled. “The snow is listening.”

Ina wasn’t sure what that meant, but she liked how it sounded.

They walked carefully along the narrow path. Yesterday, the same path had been noisy. Boots had crunched loudly. Voices had echoed between the houses.

Today, everything felt wrapped.

Ina stomped her foot.

Nothing cracked.
Nothing echoed.

She tried again, harder.

Still quiet.

She stopped walking and looked down at the ground.

The snow looked soft, but it wasn’t all the same. Some parts sparkled. Some looked smooth. Some were pressed flat.

Ina bent down and scooped a handful. It felt cold, but gentle.

🧩 A thinking pause

Ina turned to her father.

“When we walk on stones, it makes noise. When we walk on snow, it doesn’t. Why?”

Her father didn’t answer right away. Instead, he picked up a small stone from the side of the path and dropped it onto the snow.

It landed silently.

Then he dropped the same stone onto a frozen wooden step nearby.

Clack.

Ina’s eyes widened.

“They sound different,” she said.

“Why do you think that is?” he asked.

Ina thought for a moment. She pressed the snow between her fingers. It gave way easily.

“The snow moves,” she said slowly. “The wood doesn’t.”

They continued walking.

As the day grew brighter, Ina noticed something else. Near the edge of the village, snow from the roof had fallen into a thick pile. When sunlight touched it, the top slowly changed.

Water dripped.

Not fast. Just enough to notice.

🧩 Another thinking pause

“If snow is cold,” Ina asked, “why does it turn into water?”

Her father knelt beside her and pointed.

“The sun brings energy,” he said softly. “Not all at once. Just enough to help the snow change.”

Ina watched the drops fall, one by one.

The snow wasn’t disappearing.
It was becoming something else.

That evening, as they returned home, Ina walked more gently. Not because she had to — but because she wanted to hear the quiet.

Inside, she placed her wet boots near the door and hung her coat carefully.

She looked out the window one last time.

The mountains were still silent.

But now Ina knew why.

Snow didn’t steal sound.
It held it.

And sometimes, she realized, being quiet wasn’t empty at all.
